Malala Day, July 12th

Malala Yousafzai is remembered by many as The Girl Who Stood Up (also the title of her first book) for her headline-generating speech at the United Nations prior to being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize at the age of 17. She encourages people celebrating #MalalaDay to advocate for education rights around the world.

National Disability Independence Day, July 26

National Disability Independence Day celebrates the 1990 passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in everyday activities. The ADA prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability just as other civil rights laws prohibit discrimination on the basis of race, color, sex, national origin, age, and religion, and it guarantees that people with disabilities have the same opportunities as everyone else to enjoy employment opportunities, purchase goods and services, and participate in state and local government programs. It serves as the foundation for much of the work done at GMHCN.
