Certified Peer Specialist, Kaiser-Permanente Georgia

Consistent support is a key factor for managing health and wellness. People need accessible, social, and emotional support to manage and maintain good behaviors for health.  Peer support relies on non-hierarchical, reciprocal relationships, which provide a flexible supplement to formal health system services. Through shared understanding, respect, and mutual empowerment, peer support help people become and stay engaged in the recovery process and reduce the likelihood of relapse.

Program Description

In partnership with Kaiser Permanente Georgia (KPGA), Mental Health America of Georgia (MHAG) and Georgia Mental Health Consumer Network, peer support services will be offered to KPGA members to improve behavioral health outcomes.   In an effort to create a culture of wellness, Certified Peer Support Specialist will be added to KPGA Behavioral Health team to provide enhanced wrap around care. 

Certified Peer Specialist Description

As an active member of Kaiser Permanente of Georgia (KPGA) Behavioral Health Team, the Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) will work from the perspective of their lived experience to help build environments conducive to recovery. The CPS will offer the skills to support KPGA members in developing their recovery goals, and specific steps to reach those goals.

Under immediate to general supervision, the CPS will offer intentional peer support to KPGA members.  The CPS will perform a wide range of tasks to support members in living their own lives and directing their own recovery and wellness process. A summary of the expected roles and responsibilities are outlined below:

Health Education & Coaching

• Using Whole Health Wellness Coach training the CPS coaches peers in goal-setting as a tool for recovery.

• Helps provide answers to any questions peers have about their recovery plans.

• Provides mentoring in self-direct recovery.

Advocacy

• Advocates on behalf of partnered peers to protect the member’s rights and to assist in reducing stigma

• Provides social support and peer mentoring

• Assists the partnered peer in increasing social support networks of relatives, friends and/or significant others

• Supports the partnered peer as requested in their recovery.

Care Team Outreach

• Participates in recovery meetings with other providers as an advocate for the recovery of partnered peers.

Community Health Linkage

• Provides mentoring in the use of personal and community resources

• Supports in developing formal and informal community supports

 

The CPS will model competency in recovery and wellness.

• Support members in articulating personal goals for recovery and wellness.

• Support members in articulating the objectives necessary to reach his or her recovery and wellness goals.

 

Utilizing their specific training, the CPS will:

• Lead as well as model to peers how to facilitate Recovery Dialogues

• Support peers in creating a Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP).

• Utilize and model problem solving techniques with individuals and groups.

• Mentor peers in techniques for identifying and combating negative self-talk.

• Mentor peers in techniques for identifying and overcoming fears.

• Support the vocational choices peers make.

• Support members in building social skills in the community that will enhance job acquisition and tenure.

• Role model the value of every individual's recovery experience.

• Model effective coping techniques and self-help strategies.

• The CPS’s will maintain certification as peer specialist as defined by Georgia Department of Behavioral Health & Developmental Disabilities. 

• Sustain working knowledge of current trends and developments in the mental health field by reading books, journals and other relevant material.

• Attend continuing education sessions when offered by the CPS Project.

• Attend relevant seminars, meetings, and in-service trainings whenever offere

All Certified Peer Specialists employed by the Georgia Mental Health Consumer Network are required to facilitate online recovery and wellness activities provided through the Peer Support, Wellness, and Respite Centers. Qualifications

• Minimum two (2) years of experience in Peer Support role

• Certified Peer Specialist Georgia State Certification

• High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) minimum.  Associate level degree or beyond preferred

• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation

• Ability to travel up to 80% of the time and independently meet with members in the clinic, home, or community-based setting

• Demonstrated computer proficiency using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and working knowledge of the internet

• Demonstrated written and oral communication skills

• Successfully pass a criminal background check and drug screen 

 

Preferred Qualifications

• National Certified Peer Specialist (NCPS) Certification

• Whole Health Action Management Certified

• Trained in Intentional Peer Support

• Experience working with ethnic, racial, economic, broad range of ages, and sexually diverse populations

• Proficiency in other languages including Spanish

The Georgia Mental Health Consumer Network is seeking individuals in recovery from behavioral health concerns and who have lived experience with the criminal justice system to fill full-time positions in Georgia as Forensic Peer Mentors. This is an excellent opportunity to assist returning citizens transitioning from a Georgia State Prison, Transitional Center or Day Reporting Center to living self-directed lives of recovery, hope, and purpose in communities of their choice. Currently, we have the following positions available:

Double Trouble in Recovery Facilitators (part-Time, multiple locations)

Double Trouble in Recovery (DTR) Facilitators are needed to work in the Atlanta, Savannah, Thomasville, and Valdosta areas. The positions are part-time and pay $15.00/hour.

Qualifications needed:

• MUST BE in recovery from mental health and addictive disease concerns (preference will be given to Certified Peer Specialists)

• is working an active 12-step program

• has been substance-free for 2 or more years

• Valid Georgia driver’s license and transportation (mileage reimbursed at .50 per mile).

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and basic computer skills.

• Knowledge of community, state, and national resources and supports.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

• Active Certified Peer Specialist—Addictive Disease credential or eligibility to receive credential.

• Fluency in written and verbal Spanish.

 

All Certified Peer Specialists employed by the Georgia Mental Health Consumer Network are required to facilitate online recovery and wellness activities provided through the Peer Support, Wellness, and Respite Centers. It is up to each employee to connect with the staff coordinating the online activities to ensure they are able to participate sufficiently each calendar year.
