Project GREAT receives prestigious award

The Department of Psychiatry and Health Behavior at Georgia Health Sciences University is pleased to announce that the Project GREAT program (Georgia Recovery-Based Educational Approach to Treatment) has been selected to receive the American College of Psychiatrists 2012 Award for Creativity in Psychiatric Education. This prestigious national award is given annually in official recognition of a community initiative or a program at the medical school, residency, or postgraduate level that demonstrates outstanding creativity in psychiatric education.

The American College of Psychiatrists is a not-for-profit honorary association dedicated to providing continuing education to its members, promoting the latest advances in the specialty, and supporting the highest standards in psychiatry. It is comprised of a select group of more than 800 psychiatrists who have been recognized by their peers for demonstrated excellence in the field of psychiatry, and have achieved national recognition in clinical practice, research, academic leadership, or teaching.

The initial vision and development of Project GREAT was the work of Dr. Peter F. Buckley, Professor of Psychiatry and Dean of the Medical College of Georgia at GHSU. He saw this as an effort to transform mental health education and services with the Recovery Model and Patient-and Family-Centered Care. One of the principal goals is to incorporate people who receive mental health services and their family members into advisory, teaching, and care-giving roles. Our congratulations to Dr. Buckley and the Project GREAT team: Dr. Alex Mabe, Ms. Gareth Fenley and Ms. Denise Noseworthy- Certified Peer Support Specialists, Dr. Anthony Ahmed, Dr. Gina Duncan, and the many others who have contributed to the success of this program.
